X-MEN producer and writer Simon Kinberg recently spoke with IGN about 20th Century Fox’s developing NEW MUTANTS film with director Josh Boone.
“Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script,” Kinberg said on the project which follows a younger generation of mutants in training. “They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it.”
Kinberg said exploring the themes of the ‘New Mutants’ comic books will allow for younger characters in the X-Men universe to get their moment to shine. “That’s the fun for me, working in the X-Men universe, creating these sort of standalone movies that have a different vibe to them. And New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”
While not confirmed, the belief is that the film will feature some characters from the main films. The question is if it’s going to be from the past or future timeline.
“Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies. As we are going, I would say it’s likely that you will see some familiar faces.”
Surely that’s something fans are excited to hear!
When asked about the potential of Colossus’ sister Magick showing up, Kinberg would only say “It’s a great role… It would be a great role to cast.”
