Sophie Turner on DARK PHOENIX: “It’s such a departure from the last movie.”

Jean Grey actress Sophie Turner recently opened up about writer and director Simon Kinberg’s DARK PHOENIX, describing what sets it apart from other films in the “superhero movie” genre.

“This movie is kind of a lot more emotion-based, much more grounded,” she said to Digital Spy. “There are, of course, those supernatural elements, but this one is really character-driven – a really emotional story about a girl battling with a deadly mix of mental health problems and being a superhero.

“So it’s all wrapped up into one, and it’s a movie about struggle and abandonment and not knowing yourself. Yeah, an internal struggling. It’s so, so interesting. It’s such a departure from the last movie.”

While the Marvel comic books (at one point) established the Phoenix as a “cosmic force” which inhabits Grey, the films have given a biological explanation for her evolving powers. This played a minor role in X-Men: The Last Stand where Jean was shown switching from a confident personality, to a lost, scared and vengeful one at the snap of a finger.

Cast and crew are expected to return to Montreal later this year to complete reshoots on the film.

“I think it’s just a few bits and bobs, reshoot-wise,” she said regarding additional weeks of filming. “To be honest, I don’t even know what we’re reshooting at the moment. So I couldn’t really tell you much about that one.

“All I know is that I’ll be back in Montreal at some point soon, and that the Valentine’s Day release date is quite a positive thing, because Black Panther got released on Valentine’s Day. So we’re keeping positive about it.”

Turner is excited for fans to see the film, saying she put her “heart and soul into the movie.”

Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters February 14, 2019.
