DEADPOOL star Ryan Reynolds arrived to Marvel Studios last week to discuss the future of everyone’s favorite merc with a mouth, Wade Wilson. “Auditioned for the role of ‘Anthony Stark,'” he joked. “Didn’t come even remotely close, but the nice man with the taser escorted me to the ground.”
Beyond him meeting with the Marvel Gods, we have no idea what to anticipate for Deadpool’s future. Disney leader Bob Iger has previously said that the company would keep the character’s films R-rated by letting the audience know upfront it’s not the usual Marvel Cinematic Universe fare. But allowing him to mingle with the rest of the MCU could cause a challenge.
Writer Paul Wernick, who co-wrote the first two films with Rhett Reese told Entertainment Weekly “I think the party line and truth is we’re all still figuring it out. Marvel has promised to continue to let us play in the R-rated Deadpool universe, and the hope is that they will also let us veer into the MCU a little bit as well and play in that sandbox.”
When the property was under 20th Century Fox, the plan was to make an X-FORCE film, followed up by DEADPOOL 3. With all the changes happening, especially with mutants yet to be introduced into the MCU, it’s unknown if Deadpool will be able to keep his established costars, which include characters such as Colossus, Cable, Domino, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio and others.
