Here’s a roundup of X-Men news from around the web that we missed during our downtime. Down below, Henry Zaga opens up about The New Mutants; director Tim Miller talks about his likely defunct Kitty Pryde film; some info on what mutant content you can find on Disney+ and more!
The New Mutants
Last month, THE NEW MUTANTS star Henry Zaga (Sunspot) appeared at Chicago’s ACE Comic Con and briefly talked to Chuck Load of Comics about the upcoming 2020 horror film from director Josh Boone and writer Knate Lee.
“I’m bursting with excitement for this movie to come out ever since I knew I was a part of it, so of course there’s so much excitement involved,” said Zaga. “I’ve seen the movie; this is the thing, the movie is so special and we all loved making it, put so much effort and love into making it and the wait has been…[laughing]. I actually met Josh without knowing about the role at all and I was totally in the dark. He didn’t even tell me anything, and then as soon as I got home from my meeting with Josh, it was just a coffee, my agent told me, hey they’re making this movie, there’s a Brazilian superhero in it, and I was like, wait what, there’s a Brazilian superhero? I googled it and then instantly ordered the vintage comics, read them all which is a really dangerous place for an actor to try to go because you get emotionally attached to a role that’s not even yours. Anyways, it was very exciting it worked out and I can’t wait.”
“For me it was a very unique experience,” he said while answering a fan question about making the horror-tinged film. “It was me for the first time doing the craziest stunts of my life and enjoying a really intimate movie, because it’s really only six people and then other surprises. I can’t talk about it, it’s Marvel, so it was great.”
Thanks to @NewMutantsUp for the heads up!
Kitty Pryde
Some time ago, it was revealed that DEADPOOL director Tim Miller was developing a KITTY PRYDE film (referred to as 143) with famed comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis for 20th Century Fox. That was before Disney acquired the studio, effectively putting numerous X-Men projects under development in limbo which included X-23/Laura, Gambit, and Multiple Man. Now Miller tells ComicBook that he’s pretty sure the film is dead as Marvel Studio looks to reboot the entire franchise.
“I love the X-Men,” said Miller. “I don’t expect Marvel to call me and say, ‘Come do the X-Men,’ so I’m not waiting for that. I was really excited about my Kitty Pryde movie. F**k, I love that movie. It’ll never happen now.”
Disney+
With the launch of Disney’s streaming service in select countries, X-Men fans have some content to enjoy in the form of popular animated shows X-MEN, X-MEN: EVOLUTION and WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN. Unfortunately the live-action films are not available as they’re tied with other services. It’s unknown if Disney ever plans to include the films on this platform as some feature mature content and they may want to solely focus on the future Marvel Cinematic Universe iterations of these characters.
Wolverine
Speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment, actor Taron Egerton (Rocketman) talked about online chatter about him possibly becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe successor to Hugh Jackman’s iconic Wolverine character. “It’s unfounded,” Egerton told them about the rumor. “The only morsel of truth to it is that I’m a huge fan of the films, like 99.9 percent of the rest of the world. That’s kind of it, really. … I don’t quite know where it comes from. I’m flattered but baffled by it.
“There’s other characters that I think I’d be more suited to,” he continued. “If there’s one you want to play, it’s probably that one. I just love the wildness of Logan but I don’t know.”
