One of many cool sequences in DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS involves Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) breaking through 20 universes in less than a minute, with one of them showing dinosaurs roaming in a jungle.
This is the Savage Land, a prehistoric tropical preserve created by aliens, hidden in in the depths of Antarctica. Debuting in The X-Men 10 (1965), the comic featured the mutant team investigating the mysterious land after an exploration team is attacked by Ka-Zar. Fans also connect the villainous mutate Sauron, and Magneto, opening many possibilities for future stories.
Speaking with Variety, visual effect supervisor Alexis Wajsbrot of Framstore VFX revealed that it was the idea of Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige to include the Easter egg.
“We proposed a jungle and Kevin Feige said, ‘Well, it could be cool if it was Savage World.’ It’s a world that exists in the Marvel Universe, so we had to add dinosaurs. We had to model and texture and render and animate dinosaurs for two seconds, which is extremely not cost-efficient.”
It’s just a matter of time before we return to the Savage Land, as the MCU continues to expand and explore new corners of the multiverse.
