X-Men Films And Superhero Entertainment News — Trailers, Industry Coverage, Reviews, Original Comics: SUPER (2025-), Mutant Fandom And More

DC Studios has officially pulled back the curtain on Clayface, releasing the first trailer for a film that already feels unlike anything the studio has done before. Rather than leaning into traditional superhero spectacle, this project dives deep into horror. Based on the legendar Clayface from DC Comics, the film shifts the spotlight away from Gotham’s usual protector.

The trailer itself makes one thing very clear: this is a body horror film through and through. The imagery leans heavily into transformation and the loss of bodily control. It immediately invites comparisons toThe Substance, suggesting that DC is embracing a darker, more experimental tone.

At the center of the story is Matt Hagen, a struggling actor whose life takes a devastating turn after a disfiguring accident. Desperate to reclaim both his career and his sense of self, he turns to an experimental solution that promises restoration but instead delivers something far more horrifying. As his body begins to mutate into a shapeshifting, clay-like form, Hagen finds himself losing not just his appearance, but his identity.

Tom Rhys Harries leads as Hagen, bringing what looks to be an intense performance. He’s joined by Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Bates, the scientist tied to his transformation, along with Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, and David Dencik in supporting roles.

The film is directed by James Watkins, with a script from Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Producers include James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves.

What makes Clayface such a compelling figure in DC mythology is that he isn’t simply a villain in the traditional sense. Over the years, multiple characters have taken on the mantle, but Matt Hagen stands out as one of the most tragic. His powers of shapeshifting, mimicry, and near immortality are inseparable from his suffering. He’s a character defined by instability, someone who can become anyone yet struggles to remember who he truly is.

Clayface arrives in theaters on October 23, just in time for Halloween. 🎃
