Fox has released a new “Comic Con” trailer for their upcoming X-Men series THE GIFTED. It expands upon previously released footage of the pilot, directed by Bryan Singer.
If you look closely, you can see Postman there, including a couple other new mutant characters.
Showrunner Matt Nix, the principal cast and some of the show’s producers appeared today on the Comic Con International panel in San Diego. Attendees were treated to about 20 minutes of footage and learned some interesting new information.
First off, it’s confirmed that the show will not take place in the film or LEGION universe. “There are many streams,” said Nix. “[The Gifted] is in its own universe, but not in any same timeline.” Producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed this by saying there isn’t any chance of a crossover with FX’s “Legion” series.
Don’t expect any of the X-Men to show up, as “the X-Men are gone. Why are they gone? That is a thing in the show. It’s not that they’re too expensive for TV,” said Nix, who pitched the show to Fox as “Running on Empty” with mutants.
The TV format will give a better chance to explore what it means to be a mutant over the course of multiple episodes. In the show, they’ll have the opportunity to show mutants learning their powers, which manifest as expressions of their personalities and may change as the characters grow.
It will also have relevance as it will explore how much freedom people are willing to give up for security.
The mutant-hunting robots known as the Sentinels will be a major piece of the show’s storyline. “With this show, in the timeline I wanted to explore the Sentinels. You’re not locked into one version of the Sentinels,” said Nix about exploring different forms of Sentinels, likening them to new phone models.

In related news, here’s a new viral PSA for “Sentinel Services,” the government-run operation which seeks to detect mutants. If you at Comic Con, seek them out to get tested.
A suburban couple’s ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
“The Gifted” premieres October 2 at 9pm (8c) on Fox.
