According to The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly, Rosario Dawson (Marvel’s The Defenders) and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) are in negotiations to portray Dr. Cecelia Reyes and Sunspot, respectively, in director Josh Boone’s upcoming NEW MUTANTS film.
In the Marvel comic books, Reyes is a medical doctor who discovers as an adult that she possesses the ability to form biological protective fields around her body.
The site mentions that her character “assumes a mentor role for the group of fledgling heroes.” Last year, it was rumored that Professor X and Storm would serve that role, but there are reportedly no signs of them in the script.
Brazilian mutant Sunspot (real name: Roberto da Costa) is a mainstay of the ‘New Mutants’ group and has the ability to absorb and channel solar power.
They both will join Anya Taylor-Joy as the dimension-hopping Magik and Maisie Williams as the transforming Wolfsbane.
Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.
Production starts early July in Boston for a April “Friday the 13th” 2018 theatrical release.
Update: Boone confirmed Zaga’s casting. Reading the comments, a large group of fans don’t seem to be too trilled that an Afro-Brazilian actor was not chosen.
