Deadline has confirmed a report by Omega Underground that writer Simon Kinberg (Days of Future Past and Apocalypse) will make his directorial debut with X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX. 20th Century Fox just finalized his deal to direct, with production planned to start in the coming weeks in Montreal.

They also confirm that the film is going cosmic, with Jessica Chastain playing the pivotal role of “villainous” Lilandra, empress of the alien Shi’ar Empire. In the comics, she later becomes lovers with Professor X.

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are all signed to return for the film, which follows Jean Grey as she loses herself to her growing powers.

“Dark Phoenix” is scheduled for a November 2, 2018 theatrical release, after “New Mutants” on April 13, 2018 and “Deadpool 2” on June 1, 2018.

Congrats, Simon!
