Celebrating X-Men Films And Beyond

Why can’t we get THE NEW MUTANTS on Disney-owned streaming services?

WHY CAN’T WE GET THE NEW MUTANTS ON DISNEY+ OR HULU?!? It’s a question many X-Men fans have asked after various delays of director Josh Boone’s highly-anticipated X-Men horror thriller film.

20th Century Studios (now owned by Disney) has an existing contract through 2022 with HBO for streaming rights to New Mutants, including Dark Phoenix and a host of other films. It would be impossible for the studio to release the film on their own paid subscription platforms as that would directly compete with HBO.

A potential option would be for Disney to put the film up for sale on video on demand services with a price point of $19.99 or higher, but given the size of the film and it’s potential worldwide earnings, waiting for theatrical box office profits makes the most sense, business-wise.

After the tragic worldwide Covid-19 pandemic continues, cinemas are now looking to reopen this Summer. Disney has yet to set a new date for the film, but given their promotional budget is almost used up, expect a release sooner rather than later; we definitely don’t expect it to be pushed back into 2021…assuming the Corona virus doesn’t come roaring back.

It’s good to just have patience. Boone and the cast worked very hard for what they imagined to be theatrical film. Let’s wait to experience the movie as it was meant to be seen…on the big screen! Given the situation and the fact that many might not feel comfortable going to the movie theaters, it probably won’t take long for the film to reach streaming/Blu-ray/DVD home video after its theatrical release.
